Spotlight and Scribbles
This month, we are putting author C. A. Stampley in the spotlight! We have a few questions to ask you, but first let’s hear about your latest project!
Night Brawlers:
You wake up in an alternate universe where you enter dreams to fight monsters and save people from their fear and trauma. if you love the inheritance games trilogy and Carval you will love this!
In the shadowy realm between dreams and reality, Makas awakens with no memory of his past. Thrust into a world he doesn’t understand, he’s told he has a divine purpose: to brawl against the nightmarish creatures born from human trauma.
Welcome to Moonshade, a mysterious bar where the Night Brawlers gather. These chosen few are tasked with venturing into the subconscious minds of troubled souls, confronting the monstrous manifestations of their deepest fears and darkest memories.
As our hero grapples with his own lost identity, he must learn to navigate this dangerous dreamscape, facing not only the horrors lurking in others’ minds but also the growing suspicions and mistrust that his own forgotten past imposes on him.
Will he embrace his calling as a Night Brawler and uncover the truth of his existence, or will the monsters of the mind consume him, leaving the world of dreams—and reality—in peril?
Readers often find hidden threads running through a story—hope, redemption, purpose. What deeper current do you hope readers pick up on in your book?
My faith in God is the biggest part of my life and I hope more than anything people pick up on that and the encouragement I put in my books to point people to Christ. I also leave easter eggs in my novels connecting them to each other to make for fun while reading. I also put things about myself into these books like depression and anxiety and how to overcome it through Christ to give those who struggle like I do some hope in their troubles and trials.
-I love this approach, and I have to say we share one mind on this! You know the saying… great minds… 😀
Every story begins with a spark. What was the spark that ignited this book for you?
Night Brawlers was sparked from Brandon Sanderson's novel, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. Brandon was doing a sneak peak reading of his secret projects on his YouTube page and when he read Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. It sparked the idea of fighting nightmares in an alternate dimension. Then I prayed over it and asked God to lead me and that little bit of inspiration turned into Night Brawlers!
-So, you’re not only a real bro in Christ, but a Brandon Sanderson fan, too? Well, if we never meet in person, we’ll have lots to talk about in paradise.
When you write, do you see your stories as entertainment only, or do you hope readers walk away with something more lasting?
Stories are so much more than just entertainment. They are ways to convey feelings and thoughts. They can help someone express themselves in a way they never have been able to before. Being able to write is truly a blessing from God and I'm so thankful I have this avenue to point to Him and glorify Him, but also be an encouragement to others and help them in their walk with Christ. I also write because books are a way to escape this crazy world for a short time. And I want to give my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and even those who don't believe something clean and fun to enjoy without worrying about what's in the book that could negatively affect them. I want fun stories and ones that make you think and wonder and encourage deep thinking to draw you closer to God and seek Him.
-Ok, now you’re just reading from my journal, bro, because this is my entire goal, too. Here at Turn Another Page, we pray and encourage you onward in your writing journey. May Jesus bless you and keep your path even!
Night Brawlers: Available on Amazon in paperback, hardback, and ebook. It is also available on audible in audiobook format.

Snack Attack: Wicked Web Nachos 🕸️
Okay, let’s be honest, Halloween snacks don’t have to be all sugar comas and pumpkin spice overload. (Don’t come for me, pumpkin lovers. I said what I said.)
So for this spooky season, we’re going savory and sassy with Wicked Web Nachos. It’s the kind of snack that says I want to eat like a responsible adult but still vibe in dark moodiness.
Here’s the deal: Grab some blue corn chips (because aesthetics, obviously), pile on black beans and a sprinkle of cheese, then bake until that cheesy goodness melts like your willpower at a book sale (I’m projecting here). Top it with a generous scoop of guacamole, and pipe a Greek yogurt spiderweb right on top.
Slice up some black olives for your eight-legged décor, and boom! You’ve got a healthy, high-protein, Halloween masterpiece that took way less effort than it looks.
Serve it up, snap your pics, and tell everyone you’re “keeping it clean” this Halloween. They don’t need to know you ate half the pan by yourself.
Giggles & Groans
Why don’t ghosts like rain?
Because it dampens their spirits.
Writer’s Wisdom: Say More with Less
Good writing isn’t about how many words you use. It’s about how right they are. Every extra word you tack on is another chance to lose your reader’s attention, and in this economy . . . we can’t afford that.
Take this for example:
“They walked leisurely.” Cute, but clunky. Just say “They strolled.” It’s cleaner. Stronger. Confident.
Adverbs are often like glitter: fun in small doses, but too much and suddenly your story looks like a craft explosion. Instead of “She whispered softly,” just say “She whispered.” Whispering is already soft. Let your verbs do the heavy lifting.
Here’s the secret: If you can swap two words for one stronger one, do it. If your sentence still works after you delete a word, it probably reads better.
Want your writing to hit harder?
Cut filler words (that, really, very, just).
Replace weak verbs with punchy ones.
Don’t describe what the reader can already infer. (“He clenched his fists angrily”? We got it.)
Tight writing sounds intentional. Every word earns its place.
So go ahead, be ruthless with your red pen. Your future readers (and your editor) will thank you.
Verses & Victories
The Struggle Has Purpose
I’ve been camped out in Acts lately, and chapter 9 hit me right between the eyes. Saul (soon to become Paul) had this massive calling on his life. But instead of walking straight into applause and open doors, what did he face? Rejection. Fear. Death threats.
The very people he longed to reach wanted him gone. He literally had to escape in a basket just to survive. (Tell me God doesn’t have a sense of humor sometimes.)
And yet, Saul didn’t quit. He knew Who called him. He knew his purpose wasn’t dependent on comfort or recognition.
You have a calling on your life, too. But just because you’re walking in that calling doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.
Matthew 8:20 says, “The Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” That’s a verse I keep tatted on my arm. I forget sometimes: following Jesus isn’t meant to be luxurious or predictable. Just because I’m a daughter of the King doesn’t mean my path is paved in gold.
We’re here to serve, not be served. And yeah, that goes against every human instinct we’ve got. But Jesus calls us higher. He calls us to more.
So if you’re in a season where you feel unseen, exhausted, or misunderstood . . . keep your chin up. God sees your struggle. Saul didn’t understand everything when he was hanging out in that basket, but his obedience changed the world.
Your story’s not over either.
Wow! I enjoy your writing. Can’t wait to get my copy.
